Knutson left the 619 Western building in Pioneer Square in 2005, moving back to the East Coast.  He kept studios in Maplewood, New Jersey and Greenpoint, Brooklyn.  In the Fall of 2005, Michael showed his new paintings at The Villiage Quill in Tribecca.  Gone were the human forms, small minnows and birds drifting through skyscapes along with the stands of trees marked this time.  In November of this same year, Knutson rented an old cabin on Moose Island off the coast of northern Maine and lived there alone for a year, all the while painting.
